(4/6) "You are a Musahar, run, all of you beg and live anyway, thats what you are supposed to do, run away from here!” Srimathi was told when she attempted to take possession of that land that was allotted to her in 1995. Run she did but now away. She went knocking on the doors of every official responsible, telling her story. Her struggle wasn’t a day long or a month long struggle. Spanning years, she went from Gramsabha to Block to District offices to get her patta validated. Finally when it did happen and she returned successful, the caste lord squatting on her land drove her away again, dismissing her ownership.
When she proceeded with her family to the District Magistrate’s office, the DM was shocked to see a Musahar woman come to his office. This had never happened before. After verifying her documents, he directed the Police to assist her in obtaining possession. In spite of help from DM’s office, multiple cases of theft were foisted on her and her disabled son. “I had decided to fight this by myself right in the beginning. If my husband had gone in my place, they would have beat him up or arrested him. Where will we get the money to treat him or get bail? I thought to myself that maybe they’ll beat a woman less”, Srimathi says. (4/6)
