countdown to touchdown
April 11, 2017:
Spent the morning in the testbed and ran into Dan (pictured) who works in a subsystem testbed in the same building. Dan's team is responsible for delivering the avionics that control all of the motors on the spacecraft. Dan was nice enough to give me a tour of their testbed and walk me through some of the tests they were running. Prettttty cool. Especially if you're into hardware. Which I am.
Funny story about how I met Dan... he was working on the mobility team when I started on Curiosity and he offered to teach me to drive Scarecrow, the mobility test vehicle. His only rule was that if I drove it out of the shed, I had to drive it back in. This seemed incredibly reasonable, so I jumped at the offer. Taking Scarecrow out of the shed is easy, it's only when you try to drive it back in that you realize you have less than 2 inches of clearance. This is when panic set in. It's sort of like the olympics of parallel parking. Anyway, only took me three hours ... 😳🚗
