Appreciating good design includes understanding provenance for me. The stories and the people behind the products are inextricably linked to the pleasure of purchase.
And although I have long tried to champion British manufacture, I think it is utterly vital to prize and preserve indigenious specialist skills from every country and culture.
The hand-embroidered designs upon fabrics from Chelsea Textiles are absolutely exquisite, of the finest quality, and made by generations of artisans in India, which has the highest reputation for the quality of its embroidered fabrics (as well as incredible skills in handblock and screenprinting). Do take a look @chelseatextiles to see what I mean.
When I visited the London showroom I was so impressed with the attention to detail, not only in the designs themselves, but in the making of curtains and soft furnishings. Fabric is made to the exact width required for curtains. No embroidery is lost in the seams, which is so important at this level of spend.
These swatches are from my home hoard of fabrics.
Esteemed names such as @robertkime @alidad_ltd #kitkemp from @firmdalehotels and @neishacrosland
have collaborated with the brand to create beautiful ranges.
