People often ask me how do I choose the destinations for my trips, because I make such spontaneous random decisions. Well, here is the story of my recent trip to Thailand.
A few months back I had this dream of me riding an elephant I had named “Baloo” through a lush green jungle in the late afternoon. It was very humid, the air was steamy, because it had just stopped raining. You know, those heavy rainforest showers. So the rain now was vaporizing and the sun slowly pioneered her way back through the jungle canopies. Satisfied with the world and life as I was feeding him bananas and yellow mangoes while sitting on his strong back, balancing my weight with every of his mighty steps. We reached a little pond where I was bathing him, scrubbing his thick skin and… then my alarm went off – and I realized it is Tuesday morning and I have to go to my boring office job. No elephants, no jungle – and since I live in Germany no pioneering sun either.
I remember the following week being really exhausting, as I was studying hard for my upcoming finals.
About a week later, still half-sleep I was scrolling through my Instagram feed, as I usually do in the mornings to wake up. But then I saw this picture from a girl that I never even knew was on my “following list” and I was wide awake: She was on the back of an elephant in a river and he was blowing water in her face with his trunk. She was drenched in water and was boasting out laughing. The picture was amazing and all I could think was: This should be me! This looks like in my dream. I went to her profile and she had loads of pictures with elephants and I asked her where she took those pictures. She answered those were taken in North Thailand in the Province of Mae Wang, about 2 hours north-west from Chiang Mai. She is currently working as a volunteer in a camp called “Elephant Heaven”. The whole day I could not get this image off my mind. At night, when I went to bed I prayed about it and in that very moment I knew that I needed to book this trip to Thailand. So a new destination for me was born!
